I don't follow what you're saying when you say "Hold the lifter in hand and tap it few times in a open vise and watch for the plunger to pop out, hold your hand under it so it drops in your hand." Another thing you might mention is to inspect the lifter where it contacts the camshaft lobes. If it is pitted or worn, it is best to replace the lifter. Many of mine were pitted, so I decided to just replace them all
